What ML actually is

ML is a legacy Malayalam typeface from the pre-Unicode era. Fonts like it map Malayalam letterforms onto the ASCII slots meant for A–Z, so a document typed in it only reads correctly on a machine with that exact font file installed. Open it anywhere else and you get gibberish.

Why you probably do not need it

Modern systems type Malayalam natively through Unicode. Text typed in Unicode reads correctly on every phone, browser and printer without installing anything, and it is searchable — which legacy-font text never is.

We do not host the font file

ML is a commercial typeface belonging to its designer or foundry. Redistributing the .ttf is not ours to do, so there is no download link on this page. If you genuinely need the original file, get it from the rights holder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download the ML font here?

No. It is a commercial typeface and we have no right to redistribute it. This page explains what it is and gives you a Unicode alternative that needs no download.

Why does my old ML document show random English letters?

Because the font is not installed. Legacy fonts store Malayalam shapes in the A–Z slots, so without the font file you see the underlying Latin letters instead.

Is Unicode better than a legacy font?

For anything you share, yes. Unicode text renders correctly everywhere, can be searched and copied, and survives being pasted between apps.
