About the Upside Down Style

There is no upside-down alphabet in Unicode. What this generator does is find, for each letter, a different existing character that happens to resemble it rotated 180 degrees — then reverse the string so it reads correctly when flipped.

Some of the substitutions are exact. Lowercase n and u are genuinely each other's rotations, as are b and q, d and p. Others are borrowed from unrelated scripts: the flipped a is ɐ, a phonetic symbol; flipped e is ǝ, a schwa; flipped y is ⅄, a Roman numeral character.

A few have no good match at all. Uppercase Q borrows a Greek letter with an accent, and the result is only approximately right. This is inherent to the technique rather than a limitation of this particular tool.

Because the string is reversed, text-selection behaves oddly — dragging across flipped text selects it in what looks like the wrong direction. That is expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate upside down text?

Type your name into the box at the top of this page. The upside down version appears immediately — tap it to copy.

Is upside down text a real font?

No. It is a set of Unicode characters that look like a different font, which is why the styling survives copy and paste.

Why does some upside down text show as boxes?

The viewing device has no glyph for that character. Support for this style is: good — a handful of substitutes are approximate.
