Markdown vs. Unicode on Discord

These are two different systems, and knowing which to use where saves a lot of confusion.

Inside a message, use markdown — it stays searchable and screen readers handle it properly. Use Unicode only where markdown is unavailable.

How to Change Your Discord Nickname

Per server — right-click the server name, choose Edit Server Profile, paste into the Nickname field. This only changes how you appear in that one server.

Globally — User Settings, then Profiles, then edit your Display Name. Note that your username (the unique @handle) only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Styled text will be rejected there.

Why Small Caps Is the Discord Default

Browse any large server and you will see small caps everywhere. There are practical reasons.

• It always renders. Discord ships its own font stack across desktop, web and mobile, and small caps characters are covered on all three.
• It stays legible at small sizes. The member list renders names at roughly 14px, where heavy cursive turns to mush.
• It sorts sensibly. Discord orders the member list by character code. Small caps sits near normal letters; mathematical script gets shoved to the bottom.
• Moderators tolerate it. Many servers ban unreadable names outright. Small caps rarely triggers that rule.

Rules That Get Names Rejected

Discord itself enforces very little on nicknames beyond a 32-character limit. Individual servers enforce much more, usually through a moderation bot:

• Hoisting — starting a name with !, # or a symbol to jump to the top of the member list. Most large servers auto-rename this.
• Unmentionable names — if nobody can type your name, some bots replace it automatically.
• Impersonation — copying a moderator's name and style is a fast ban.
• Zalgo text — stacked combining marks that overflow the row. Near-universally banned.

The strikethrough and underline styles on this page use single combining marks, which is fine. Stacking dozens of them is what gets flagged.
