10Stays searchable — your letters are unchangedWhatsApp has built-in formatting for messages — asterisks for bold, underscores for italic. What it has no option for is styling your profile name or your About line. Those need Unicode text.
This generator covers both cases: decorated names for your profile, and styled text for messages and status updates.
WhatsApp Built-In Formatting
Before reaching for Unicode, note that messages already support real formatting, which stays searchable and accessible:
| Effect | Type this | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *text* | text |
| Italic | _text_ | text |
| Strikethrough | ~text~ | |
| Monospace | ```text``` | text |
This only works inside messages. Profile names and About lines ignore it entirely — that is where the styles above earn their place.
How to Set a Stylish WhatsApp Name
- Copy a style from the generator above.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Tap your profile at the top.
- Tap the pencil next to your name, clear it, and paste.
- Save.
The same steps work for your About line, which allows up to 139 characters.
One Thing Worth Considering
Your WhatsApp profile name is not how most people see you. Contacts see whatever name they saved you under in their own address book. Your styled name is visible mainly in group chats, to people who have not saved your number, and in your own profile view.
That is not a reason to skip it — group chats are exactly where standing out is useful. It is worth knowing so the effort lands where you expect.
Styles That Survive WhatsApp
WhatsApp renders using the system font on each device, so coverage varies more than on Discord or Instagram. From most to least reliable:
- Cursive, bold, italic — render everywhere, including older Android
- Small caps and bubble text — very good coverage
- Gothic and double-struck — good, occasional gaps on budget devices
- Hieroglyphs and cuneiform frames — frequently show as boxes on Android below version 10
Given how much of WhatsApp's user base is on older Android hardware, the conservative styles are the sensible default here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write a stylish name on WhatsApp?
Copy a style from this page, open Settings, tap your profile, edit the name field and paste. WhatsApp saves the Unicode characters as-is.
Can I style my WhatsApp About status?
Yes. The About field accepts the same Unicode text, up to 139 characters.
Why can my friend not see my stylish name?
Contacts who saved your number see their own saved name for you, not your profile name. Your styled name shows in groups and to people who have not saved you.
How do I make bold text in WhatsApp messages?
Wrap the text in asterisks — *like this*. WhatsApp also supports _italic_, ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace``` in messages.
Do WhatsApp stylish names work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, though rendering depends on the device font. Cursive, bold and small caps are safe on both; rare decorative symbols may show as boxes on older Android phones.
